Top 10 Places to Eat in Rocky Point

One of the highlights of visiting Mexico is the food. Authentic Mexican food is relished across the world, and Rocky Point is home to some hidden culinary gems.

In the 20 years of going down to Rocky Point with family and friends, we have had many wonderful surprises, and a few disappointing dinners. Now, when it comes time to decide where we are going to eat, a few select spots are always at the top of the list. Spending one of your Rocky Point evenings at a restaurant with mediocre food and poor service will could tarnish your whole experience and leave a bad taste in your mouth.

So where should you go?

Here are my personal Top 10 Places to Eat in Rocky Point:

  1. Chef Mickey’s Place: Blvd. Freemont, Benito Juárez, 83554 Puerto Peñasco, Son., Mexico

Located on Freemont Blvd, Chef Mickey’s Place is an upscale restaurant with amazing food. Chef Mickey was the 2009 Rocky Point Iron Chef winner, and the menu is an accurate reflection of this accolade. If you are a big group/with kids/looking for a cheap dinner, I wouldn’t recommend going here. However, if you want to dress nice, fine dine, go on a date, or celebrate a special occasion, Chef Mickey’s Place is the place.

*Cristi’s Recommendation: Shrimp and Gorgonzola Stuffed Dates (Appetizer)

  1. Med: Paseo Las Palmas Km 3.7, Costa Diamante, 83550 Puerto Peñasco, Son., Mexico

Med is the Las Palmas Resort restaurant. With a patio that is right next to the pool and the beautiful Las Palmas grounds, Med is a quick and easy place to go if you don’t want to leave Sandy Beach. My family and I, while staying at Sonoran Sun, have walked on the beach to Med at night, had a great dinner, and walked back, all without stepping foot in a car or on a road. Parking is free if you decide to drive.

*Cristi’s Recommendation: Tableside Fajitas (Entrée)

  1. Satisfied Frog: Circunvalación y o Malecón Kino 12, El Puerto, Puerto Peñasco, Son., Mexico

The Satisfied Frog is located at the end of the road next to the fish market/port. The fresh Sea of Cortez breeze brushes by you when the windows are open. If you are looking for a great place to eat, especially on a Sunday, Satisfied Frog is a must. On Sunday, their fried chicken is buy one get one free. The portions are huge and you can go home with a to-go bag that has food for the next few days. My two hungry boys, who are in their 20’s, weren’t able to finish all of the food and we got out of there for less than $50, including drinks.

*Cristi’s Recommendation: Fried Chicken and make sure to get the coleslaw. Buy one get one free on Sunday (Entrée)

  1. Fish Market/Port/Malecon: El Puerto, Puerto Peñasco, Son., Mexico

The heart and soul of Rocky Point is the fish market, also known as “El Puerto” or “Malecon”. Located directly above the fish markets are several restaurants that all yield a great view of the Sea of Cortez. These are better defined as “bars that serve food”. You are able to get ceviche, quesadillas, fresh fish, chicken tenders, etc., at these restaurants. These spots are better for getting some drinks and casually eating. If you are looking for an affordable dinner, these spots are great. The music, people, drinks, and view all create an electric atmosphere that you should definitely experience. This area is ideal for a midday lunch. I would highly recommend grabbing some freshly caught fish from the fish market below to cook for dinner. We usually get a light lunch, have some drinks, then snag some shrimp and clams for dinner later that night.

  1. TeKillya’s: El Puerto, Puerto Peñasco, Son., Mexico

Located right across the street from the fish market, “Tekillya’s” is an exceptional bar with great American food. What is special about this place is the atmosphere. They play modern pop and dance music, which creates a fun environment. The patio seating is great and allows you to overlook the market and Sea of Cortez.

  1. Citron: Located at Las Palomas Phase 2

Citron is a nice, sit down restaurant at Las Palomas Phase 2. The price tag is a little high, but you are guaranteed some great food. At the least, stop by for some drinks and get an appetizer. Guests can enjoy an intimate dining environment with international fusion cuisine. Citron Fine Cuisine restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, and the bar is open until 10:30 pm daily. There are also buffet options throughout the week!

*Cristi’s Recommendation: Salmon (Entrée)

  1. El Capitan: 1 Aqua Ave., Puerto Penasco, Mexico

Located on top of the “Rocky Point”, El Capitan provides the best view of Puerto Penasco and the Gulf of California. If you are a first-timer to Rocky Point, you must pay El Capitan a visit just for the view. The food is good, traditional Mexican food. Great for a big group, since the prices are average and the experience is superb.

  1. Mare Blu: Blvd. Paseo de la Duna Puerto Penasco, Sonora 83550

Located right next to Wrecked at The Reef, Mare Blu is an upscale beachfront restaurant. Some of the best food in Rocky Point can be found here. The servers are amazing and very sociable. Even if you don’t get a full meal here, at least stop by for some dessert and Mexican Coffee. The desserts are amazing and very affordable. If you play piano, you can hop on the grand piano in the center of the restaurant and play a tune.

*Cristi’s Recommendation: Tableside performance of Mexican/Spanish/Irish Coffee (Dessert)

  1. Calle 13 Tacos: Located on Calle 13

There are several street side taco restaurants on Calle 13 that serve amazing food. You can identify them by the roadside grill that is adjacent to Calle 13. At $1.50, these places are great for big groups or if you are looking for an authentic experience. These spots are also great since it is BYOB, so you don’t have to pay higher prices for drinks. The tacos will come with a platter of authentic salsas and veggies that you can’t resist.

  1. Your Condo!: Wherever you are staying

Some of the most enjoyable nights are when we decide to cook dinner in condo and eat on the balcony. Take advantage of the condo’s accommodations and wonderful view, it’s what you paid for! There is nothing like smell of fish, garlic, and pasta while sitting on your patio watching the sun set over the Sea of Cortez. Grab food from the fish market, Lucas’ chicken, or a street side taco restaurant and bring it back for everyone to enjoy on the patio.

*Cristi’s Recommendation: At Lucas Chicken, get the Citrus Marinated Pulled Chicken for $10. A lot of food!
