Frequently Asked Questions

Is there Wi-Fi in the condos?

All condos at the Sonoran Sun will have Wi-Fi. The login and passwords are under your modem. Be sure to use capitals when needed. If you cannot get the Wi-Fi to work you can contact front desk and ask for HOA to come up and help you. If your condo has a land line then you can call the states for free: pick up the phone, dial your area code and phone #.  This is a shared Vonage phone line and it may be busy during the day. Guests can call you at 602-412-3715 (front desk) and ask for your room # and the call will be transferred.

*Sonoran Sun is the only resort that has Wi-Fi in every room

Is Mexican car insurance mandatory?

Yes, Mexican Car Insurance is mandatory for traveling to Rocky Point. If you don’t have auto insurance and are involved in an accident, then you will be put in jail until you can pay for the damages in CASH. With auto insurance though, you can avoid this disaster. You can get Mexican Car Insurance by clicking here.

We recommend Adventure Mexican Insurance to all of our guests because it offers you quotes from four different A-rated Mexican car insurance companies, free helicopter air evacuation to the USA, and the ability to purchase and print your policy BEFORE your trip! There is no need to stop along the way to Mexico and waste an hour getting car insurance in person. You can read more about this subject on our Get Mexican Car Insurance page, which is where you can buy your Mexican car insurance through Adventure Mexican Insurance.

Can I take my rental car across the border?

Yes, Hertz is your best option. Hertz allows you to take a limited selection of car models across the border, and you have to stay within 250 miles of the USA border (Rocky Point is within 250 miles so you are fine).

What should we bring for our vacation to Rocky Point?

I always bring paper towels, dish soap, laundry soap, dishwasher soap, 13 gal trash can liners, plastic wrap, foil, bottled water for drinking, gallons for the dispenser, spices (salt and pepper), cooking spray, coffee filters, coffee and food.  You may also want to bring cleaning spray for the counters as that is never left in the condo when I get there.

Additionally, as a rule of thumb, anything items that you consume/put in the trash, are items that you should bring. We do not supply you with any sundries. The housecleaner will supply you with 1 roll of paper towels, 1 dishwasher tab, 1 scoop of laundry soap, and toilet paper.

What items are we NOT allowed to bring to Rocky Point?

Any meat items are prohibited and will be taken at the border. Guns and ammo are prohibited and will get you arrested if you try to take across the border.

What restaurants should we go to?

El Capitan: Located on top of the “Rocky Point” (next to the lighthouse), El Capitan offers its customers with a beautiful view of the Sea of Cortez and Sandy Beach. If you time it right, you can watch the sunset while having dinner and drinks.

Chef Mickey’s: Located on Freemont Blvd. This is an upscale restaurant with amazing food. I highly recommend going here for a nice night out.

Wrecked at The Reef: Located West of the resorts on Sandy Beach (in front of the new rock pier). This is a favorite for casual dinner and drinks. They have fire pits and a corn hole set up in the back on the beach. On the weekends, Wrecked hosts a live band and the dance floor is always good place to be.

Mare Blu: Located right next to Wrecked at The Reef (in front of the new pier, west of the condos). This is fine dining and has some of the best food in Rocky Point (try their desserts as well).

Calle 13 Roadside Tacos: If you drive down Calle 13 there will be several roadside taco restaurants. They are all BYOB and very cheap at $1.50 per taco.

Fish Market/Mercado: Any restaurant by the fish market is enjoyable to visit. You can indulge in the fish market atmosphere and soak in a wonderful view of the Sea of Cortez, while eating freshly caught fish from the fish market below. The restaurants are open air and built above the fish market, and one of our favorites is “Tekillyas”.

Bryans: Located on Freemont street, a nice American sports bar. No ocean views, but great specials. Wednesday is $5.00 pasta, Thursday is $0.20 wings, and Friday is prime rib.

Max’s: Great for breakfast and a Bloody Mary

Your Condo!: The best meal in town is the one that you cook in your condo. With the door’s open and the ocean breeze filing through the condo, we love to cook clams, shrimp, etc. and eat on the balcony. No restaurant can beat the view from your balcony. Grab some seafood from the fish market and bring the party back to your condo!

What kind of activities are there to do?

We have a concierge and her name is Lidia. She can arrange a fishing trip, bird island tour, dinner cruise or quad rental for you. We also have kayak rentals at our front office. The resort now has its own boat (Senorita Rita) and you can contact Lidia to arrange a sunset cruise or whale watching. Additionally, jet ski's, banana boats, horseback riding and massages are all directly in front of Sonoran Sun on our beach.

What credit cards are accepted in Rocky Point?

American Express is the only credit card that is NOT accepted. All other credit/debit cards work. All normal credit card fees apply.

Does my cell phone work in Rocky Point?

Call your provider and ask questions about your plan when travel to a foreign country. Every provider and plan is different, so I cannot give you any information with regards to your cell service. If you do not have an international calling plan you will want to put your cell phones on airplane mode once you cross the border. If the condo you are staying in has Wi-Fi, then you can switch your phones to Wi-Fi and have free cell service. Also, before you leave for Mexico, I recommend downloading a messaging app on your phone (we personally use WHATSAPP). Operating through the Wi-Fi, you can text anyone who has the app for free, so tell your group to download WHATSAPP.

What does arrival day look like?

Check-in is at 4:00 P.M. When you pull up to the guard gate present your confirmation. When you check in at the front desk present your signed rules and regulations. At this time, you will pay any remaining balance. You will be given wrist bands needed to use the pool and resort amenities, keys and parking pass. Front desk will collect a damage waiver (if it applies to the resort you are staying at).

What does departure day look like?

Please check out at the front desk before 11 am. Any damages or missing items will be charged to your credit card on file.

How much cash should we bring?

Pretty much every merchant (from the vendors on the beach to the upscale restaurant) accept United States Dollars. There is no need to exchange USD for Mexican pesos. Depending on your vacationing habits, bring enough cash to pay for breakfast, lunch, dinners, swim-up bar food/drinks, beach vendors, banana boats, jet skis, tips, etc. As always, practice safe and healthy vacationing behavior and avoid having all of your cash on you at once. The condos on Sandy Beach are all very safe and you should consider keeping your money in your condo and only taking it out when necessary.

What does the housekeeping fee include?

Your cleaning fee pays for the condo to be clean and ready for your arrival, and to be cleaned after your departure. You do not have daily maid service like a hotel. This is why you need to bring laundry detergent and trash can liners.

Do we get a refund if there is inclement weather?

There are no refunds for Hurricanes or Tropical Storms. We highly recommend getting TRAVEL Insurance for your trip. It is up to the guest to purchase this coverage. Coverage is available for health and weather related problems. We do not provide this service nor do we guarantee your vacation.

Is the water safe to drink?

Rocky point has safe drinking water, since the town has chlorinated its water for the past 15 years. There are occasional water-outages that usually don't last for more than a couple of hours. This is why it is important to bring bottled water for your stay. If you have water in the kitchen but not in the shower, this just means you are not turning on the faucets correctly. If you cannot get hot water in shower but have hot water in the sinks this means you are turning the knob the wrong direction. If the hot water heater was broken you would not have hot water in any of the faucets.

Is there a maintenance service at the resort?

If you feel something in your condo needs repair such as A/C, heating, water leak, clogged drain, please dial 0 for the front desk and ask for maintenance. Please keep in mind you are vacationing in a 3rd world country. There are constant power surges that cause our light bulbs to burn out and our small appliances to be replaced 2-3 times a year. We depend on our guests to let us know when an appliance needs to be replaced and to call the front desk and ask maintenance to replace the light bulbs. Some major and minor inconveniences are to be expected and are not worthy of a refund.

How do we book a special occasion?

Lidia can make your special occasion even more special. Arrange to have a gift basket and balloons and streamers for any occasion, before you arrive or during your stay.  She even decorated my condo for Christmas, with a tree and decorations. It was beautiful. Email her at: seasideconcierge2@gmail.com  or call at 602-288-8966.

What time is the swim-up bar open?

Our restaurant and swim up bar are privately owned. They are not employees of the resort or management company. They can close early if they are not busy or they can close for weeks if they choose to. It is not a guarantee that they will be open for your stay. But if you are there during peak season (summer, spring break, holidays), you can bet that it will be open.

Final note:

You are staying at a condo not a hotel. This means that the resort staff does not work for you like at a hotel. They are employed by our HOA and answer to the owners of which almost 50% do not rent their condos. They are employed to enforce our HOA rules and bylaws. I expect all of my guests to wear their wrist bands at all times and if/when security makes a request of you that you abide respectfully. I hope you love Rocky point as much as we do and I look forward to hearing from you for your next trip:)
