The Real Scoop on Mexican Car Insurance

It is a common, and very detrimental, misunderstanding that your US auto insurance policy applies to Mexico. It does not!

Your US car insurance policy does not cover you in Mexico!

First off, Mexican authorities will not recognize US auto insurance companies (Geico, Allstate, State Farm, etc.)

Secondly, by Mexican law, liability insurance in Mexico must be provided by an admitted Mexican insurance company.

US policies specifically exclude coverage for locations outside of the US, Canada, and Puerto Rico.

In Mexico, an accident means facing a local judge who determines the guilty party. This is very different from the US, where insurance information is exchanged, and we go our separate ways.

If you are deemed guilty WITHOUT Mexican Car Insurance:

The party that is deemed responsible for the accident will be held until their ability to pay for the damage is demonstrated to the authorities. This is best done with cash. In the case that you cannot immediately demonstrate your ability, you will be held in jail.

If you are deemed guilty WITH Mexican Car Insurance:

If you have purchased liability coverage (which is REQUIRED by Mexican Law), this will adequately demonstrate the ability to pay for the damage, and you will not be held in jail.

Additionally, having legal assistance is imperative to a smooth process, since the legal system in Mexico can be very intimidating, especially when you don’t speak Spanish and possess very little knowledge of the system.

The bottom-line is that not having insurance can equal a fine, or worse, jail time. This is why seasoned Mexico visitors call Mexico insurance the "get out of jail free card."
