I often get asked if it is legal to take a rental car across the border into Mexico. After telling many of my guests that I simply "don't know", I finally decided to do the research for you.
Low and behold, Hertz allows you to rent a car and take it across the Mexico border for your vacation to Rocky Point. The trick is that there are only a few specific car models that you are allowed to take across the border. Directly from the website, I have listed those cars below.
By living in Arizona, you are lucky because EVERY ARIZONA HERTZ LOCATION has the same border crossing policy. So whether you live in Flafstaff or Tucson, you can grab a rental car from your local Hertz location before your trip to Rocky Point. Through CarRentals.com, you can search your city and dates, then use the filter on the right hand side to see all of the rental available through Hertz and make sure to pick one of the cars below.
The following cars are allowed to be rented from any Arizona Hertz location and taken across the Mexico border:
$38 per Calendar Day
- (A) Chevrolet Spark or similar
- (A6) Manager's Special 2 or 4 Door
- (B) Nissan Versa or similar
- (C) Toyota Corolla or similar
- (C4) Chevy Cruze - Fuel Saver
- (D) VW Jetta or similar
- (E6) Toyota Prius Hybrid or similar
- (F) Chrysler 200 or similar
- (F6) Nissan Altima or similar
- (Q4) Toyota RAV4 or similar
$48 per Calendar day
- (F4) Hyundai Santa Fe or similar

- (L) Toyota 4Runner or similar

- (M) Ford Transit (12/15 psgr) or similar
- (R) Nissan Quest or similar
Additionally, you will need to get Mexican Auto Insurance through Hertz. After you have booked your car rental, contact Hertz about getting the appropriate insurance. Read below.
Directly from the Hertz website:
“The Mexican Insurance is available for retail rentals only and allows travel up to 250 miles south of the U.S./Mexico border (Rocky Point is within 250 miles so you are fine). Requirements for corporate account customers may vary. Please contact the appropriate department.
Only the original renter may purchase the Mexico Insurance. The Mexico Insurance can only be added to rentals where the forms of payment is a credit card. Cash or Hertz Charge Cards are not an acceptable form of payment.
Mexican law does not allow Mexican citizens to bring a U.S. vehicle into Mexico, or operate a U.S. vehicle within Mexico. The sale of Mexican insurance to a citizen of Mexico is not permitted.”
So here are the steps to renting a car:
- Visit CarRentals.com
- Enter your city and the dates for your rental
- On the left hand side, under "Rental Company", check the "Hertz" box
- Find one of the cars that are eligible for Mexico border crossing (listed above)
- Purchase Mexican Liability Auto Insurance (contact Hertz after you have booked your car rental)
- Enjoy your trip!
